Professional career of Enzo Fernández

From a humble family with four brothers, Fernández started playing football at the age of five at Club La Recova, in his hometown and was taken to River Plate in 2006, at the age of six.

In 2019, he was promoted to River Plate's main team and was listed for the first time in a game in the 3–1 defeat to Patronato , on January 27, 2019. His debut was the following year, on March 4, 2020, in the 3–0 defeat to LDU , in the 1st round of the Libertadores group stage .

Defense and Justice

2020

On 22 August, Fernández was loaned together with Franco Paredes until December 2021 to Defensa y Justicia . He made his debut for Florêncio Varela 's club on 18 September 2020, in a 3–0 victory over Delfín .

On December 8, he scored his first goal for Defensa in the 3–2 victory over Bahia , in the first game of the Sudamericana quarter-finals.

2021

He was in the squad that became champions of the 2020 South American Championship by beating Lanús 3–0, having also been selected for the team of the tournament. They also became champions of the 2021 Recopa Sul-Americana after beating Palmeiras 4–3 on penalties (Palmeiras had won the first game 2–1 and Defensa applied the same score in the return game, forcing penalties) . He was an absolute starter during his time at Defensa with both Beccacece and Crespo , playing in 33 matches with one goal and two assists, in addition to participating in the conquests of the Sul-Americana and Recopa in 2021, being a starter in both competition decisions.

Return to River Plate

2021

After having his return requested by coach Marcelo Gallardo , Fernández returned to River in June 2021. He made his first appearance for River in the 2–0 victory over Vélez, in a game valid for the sixth round of the Argentine Championship .

2022

On April 10, in the 4–2 victory over Argentinos Juniors , he was applauded for his performance (he scored one of the goals) and was emotional in the post-game interview.

He started the year on a high, being speculated on in European teams and elected the best footballer active in Argentina , having until April 24th been River's top scorer in the Argentine Championship with five goals, in addition to distributing six assists. He played in 53 matches for River, scoring 12 goals and distributing 10 assists.

Benfica

On July 15, 2022, he was announced as a Benfica player for five seasons with the negotiation value being around 10 million euros. Two days later, Fernández made his debut in a pre-season friendly against Nice and played for 45 minutes, with the Benfica fans winning 3–0. His debut in an official competition took place on August 5 in the 4–1 victory over Midtjylland in the first game of the third qualifying round of the Champions League , where he scored his first goal for the club and had a praised performance.

Enzo left Benfica with four goals and six assists in 29 games.

Chelsea

On the last day of the January 2023 transfer window , Chelsea announced the signing of Fernández. The London club paid 121 million euros for Enzo's release clause, with a contract signed until 2031. The value of 107 million pounds became the British record. On February 3, 2023, Enzo Fernández made his debut for the Blues in a 0-0 draw against Fulham in the 22nd round of the Premier League .
